THE POWER OF PROTECTION
IN ANCIENT ART
Apotropaic masks originated in ancient Greece with a specific purpose: to ward off evil, protect those who wore them and shield sacred spaces from harmful influences.
The term apotropaic derives from the Greek word apotrépein, meaning “to turn away” or “to repel”. For this reason, faces, masks and figures with powerful features were carved on temples, homes, ships, armour and jewellery as symbols of protection.
In the culture of Magna Graecia, these symbols represented a spiritual barrier against the evil eye, misfortune and hostile forces. Their piercing gaze and strongly expressive forms were intended to intimidate evil and preserve the harmony of those who kept their image close.
The ROMEO apotropaic masks reinterpret this ancient tradition through the craftsmanship of precious metals, transforming a symbol that has endured for millennia into a jewel rich in meaning, history and cultural identity.
Each piece is handcrafted in our workshop in Crotone, the city of Pythagoras, using traditional goldsmithing techniques that enhance every detail of the original sculpture.
